The ‘ideal self’ we project online is merely an illusion. It’s a digital carapace we weave around ourselves in a desperate bid to belong.
Every day we post images of our ‘perfect’ lives. Projecting little vignettes of our ideal selves. We pretend to others (and ourselves) that we’re wealthier, busier, happier, slimmer, younger, older, more successful, more popular, more beautiful, more, more, more and in my case less hairy… and it’s all bullshit!
Zoom out a bit and it's all just smoke and mirrors, our lives are tiring, chaotic, messy, sometimes boring and often lonely. All of our insecurities are veiled. We don’t know how to be alone, how to enjoy the silence, or our own company!
Instead, through our little envy amplification device, our narrative is that we’re in bloody Ibiza.
